The “Ick Factor” often shows up when nonprofit leaders hear the word branding. Many assume branding is too corporate, too commercial, or somehow at odds with mission-driven work. That discomfort can create a disconnect for supporters between an organization’s mission and the way it communicates that mission to the world. Without a clear brand framework guiding messaging, voice, and visuals, fundraising, advocacy, and marketing can become inconsistent or diluted. When nonprofit leaders understand that their brand is simply a clear expression of who they are, what they stand for, and why their work matters, that disconnect fades and their mission becomes easier for others to understand and support.
